Recipe for a bitchin' Thursday night:
Aquarium
Red Wine
Jens Lekman
$12
Mash well.
What in tarnation? you say. And I say, last night I went to Nightlife, a weekly event hosted by the California Academy of Sciences. Admission is $12 which includes access to the planetarium, aquarium, natural history museum, and oh yeah a four story rainforest. Aquariums are one of my desert island necessities. Though if I'm on a desert island, I guess my entire surroundings will be an aquarium. Whatever, I really like aquariums is the take-away. And four story rainforests ain't so bad either. The event is 21+ (enter red wine) so there's no risk of kids hogging all the prime jellyfish viewing spots. Damn kids.
And that's not all - as a promo for the upcoming Treasure Island Music Festival (which I will not be attending as I will be preoccupied selling my soul to The Man), there was a performance by our favorite pop music playing, silly lyric writing Swede: Jens Lekman. (In my head I said that like Oprah) He was terrific! A little more on the acoustic, decelerated side than I had expected but he picked it up at the end with Sipping on Sweet Nectar and I Remember Every Kiss. If he had played Postcard to Nina I might have just up and died.

twin twin shadow shadow
I forgot to mention - I saw Twin Shadow last Saturday at the Great American Music Hall, one of my favorite venues in San Francisco. Like hell if we didn't shimmy our hearts out. George Lewis Jr., Mr. Twin Shadow himself, is a riot - he's called the "Brown David Bowie", has a Morrissey-esque voice and sports a Prince style quaff and bolo tie. Whoever he is, I like.

no thank you
No thank you to work, to people, to thinking today. No thank you to bus waiting, to leftover eating, to cubicle monotony, to cough drops. I'll have one listen and go back to bed. On a beach. In the sun.

where your heart goes
In typical monday-morning-woe-is-me-over-privileged-ungrateful-bean style, every song I listened to today made my nose scrunch up and my brow furrow. Until this one.

mental floss
Something potentially wonderful is on the horizon. I'm trying my darndest not to get my hopes up.
Some Bon Iver to quiet my mind.

its beginning to feel a lot like summer
It's finally hot outside! Little slow on the uptake but I knew we'd get there. I believed in you Summer! It was me and you against all the Negative Nancy's and we won! We won dammit!
One of my awesome roommates had an extra ticket to Laura Marling this past Saturday and in the process of telling me this piece of news, she must have noticed the string of drool slopping out of the corner of my mouth because she offered it to moi. Laura seems very much like your average young performer (she's a wee 21) but the moment that strumming and humming begins you know you're witnessing something special. 'Twas a splendid performance.
Laura's new album, A Creature I Don't Know, came out last week and I (shocker) have mixed feelings. I always view a new album as an affront to all previous albums. Like the pretty new girl in your class who throws off the status quo with her newness and prettiness. What about the dependably sturdy manish girl who's been there the whole time? Anywho, upon further inspection this new album, like most of the ones I initially cast-off, is a treat. Her lyrics continue to be hearty and seriously wise beyond her years. I predict Ms. Marling will be around for a while and I can't wait to hear whats next.

Not off the new album, but terrific nonetheless

dance dance revolution
I'm no stranger to the dance floor but I ain't got nothing on The Younger Lovers. Part carefree rock (a la The Go! Team) and part dance tutorial, "We are the Younger Lovers/Keeps on Falling Down" will put a smile on your face. And impress your friends at da clubz. Meow.

bump and grind
Let Indian Summer begin! And to those who made better decisions in college, have a nice long weekend. I'll be in this office, eating an inappropriate amount of Hershey's Kisses and working on my vitamin D deficiency.
